How to import a vehicle or car permanently into the Republic of Cyprus

When your vehicle arrives in the Republic of Cyprus it will first need to be declared to your local customs office within 24hrs of its arrival whilst declaring your vehicle to the Cypriot customs office you will be issued with a c104 form which entitles you to drive the vehicle in Cyprus on a temporary basis (c104 forms are usually valid for 6 months) whilst your vehicle is being prepared for registration next you will need to pay any VAT and Duty due within in 10days of the vehicle arriving in Cyprus unless an application for VAT and Duty relief has been submitted to your local customs office.

Once all Vat and Duties are paid or your application for VAT and Duty relief has been approved you will be issued with a c72a form from the customs office which will then be used later in the registration process as proof that all VAT and Duties due on your vehicle are paid.

If your vehicle has been imported from outside of the European Union (EU) without EU type approval you will need to apply for an Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) where the vehicle will be tested to make sure that it complies with certain EU road safety and environmental requirements during this process most vehicles will need to undergo some modifications to enable them to pass this test.

Once your vehicle has passed an SVA test or has EU type approval you will need to obtain an Emissions certificate from the Department of Transport then vehicles over 4 years old from the date of first registration in its country of origin will need an Department of Road Transport (DORT) test which is a road worthiness test and can be carried out at a number of authorised garages throughout Cyprus during this test you will need to show your imported vehicles registration document or title and your Emissions Certificate.

Now you are in procession of all the documentation needed to register your vehicle so next stop is the Department of Transport office to have your vehicle inspected and submitted for registration at this point you will need to pay your vehicle registration tax and road tax both of these taxes are based upon the engine size of your vehicle when your registration is approved you will be issued with your new Cypriot registration number leaving one last thing to do which is have your new number plates made and fitted to your vehicle.
