Temporary vehicle imports in France
Anyone over 18 years old can temporarily import a vehicle to France from any country within or outside of EU for a period of up to 6 months at which point the vehicle must be exported. All vehicles temporarily imported into France must be road legal in there country of origin (ie road tax, roadworthiness certificates where applicable and has current valid insurance) without the need to full conform to French road safety and environmental standards and can be driven on you home countries driving license. This can be done without the need to pay tax or import duty as long as all taxes are up to date in the country of origin although there are a few conditions for temporary vehicle imports which are detailed below.
- The vehicle cannot be used by French residents
- The can only be used for personal use
- The vehicle cannot be sold or disposed of in France
Exceptions for workers and students
There are special conditions when temporarily importing a vehicle for workers sent to France for a set period of time and for students studying in France. Students from within or outside of the EU may temporarily import a vehicle into France for the duration of there studies and up to 12 months for workers this can be done tax and import duty free as long as all relevant taxes have been paid in the country of origin the vehicle also does not have to comply to French road safety and environment standards and can be driven on you home countries driving license. Students and workers temporarily importing there vehicle will have to notify customs when the vehicle arrives and show proof of acceptance to school or college and in the case of workers temporary employment contract and in some cases customs will require some sort of security and the following conditions must be followed.
- The vehicle cannot be used by French residents
- The can only be used for personal use
- The vehicle cannot be sold or disposed of in France
