ITV Test (inspeccion tecnica de vehiculos)
In Spain any vehicle over 4 years old from its date of first registration in its country of origin is required to under go an ITV (inspeccion tecnica de vehiculos) to make sure that the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition and that the exhaust Co2 emmissions are of an acceptable level vehicles over 4 years but under 10 years are required to take the ITV test every 2 years but vehicles over 10years old must be tested every year.When taking you vehicle for an ITV test you must take the following docuuments:
- Vehicle Registration Document (permiso de circulacion) or title
- Technical Papers (ficha technico)
- ITV Card if vehicle has previously been tested
- Lights
- Brakes
- Suspension
- Tyres
- Exhaust Emmissions
- Wheel alignment
- Body work
- Mirror and glass
- Wipers
After your vehicle has been tested you will be issued with a summary of the findings there will be 2 sections in the summary Infracciones Graves (Major faults) & Infracciones Leves (Minor Faults) any items mentioned in the Infracciones Graves (Major faults) section must be repaired before an ITV certificate can be issued.If your vehicle does fail its ITV test you will have 2 month to complete the repairs and have the vehicle retested.Once your vehicle has passed its ITV test you will be issued with a card showing the results of tests taken and you will also be given a sticker/certicate detailing when the vehicle is next due for testing which must be displayed in the top right hand corner of the vehicles windscreen.You can find your local test centre at the DGT (Direccion General de Trafico) website.
